Can You Visit Pompeii in a Wheelchair?

In short

Yes. Pompeii has a dedicated accessible route called 'Pompeii per tutti' (Pompeii for all) — a 3-kilometre step-free itinerary that includes the Forum, the House of the Faun, the Lupanare and the Amphitheatre. Entry is free for visitors with a disability and one companion.

Pompeii looks like the last place a wheelchair could go — 2,000-year-old stone streets, deep cart ruts, no pavement. But the site has invested heavily in accessibility and the result is one of the better step-free archaeological visits in Italy.

The 'Pompeii per tutti' route

A 3km step-free loop with hard-packed paths, ramps over the original stone streets, and lifts where needed. The route is signposted from the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance and takes about 3 hours at a comfortable pace.

Which entrance to use

Use the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance (not Porta Marina, which has the original ramp but is followed by uneven stones). Piazza Anfiteatro is where the accessible route begins and where the staff are trained to assist.

What's on the route

The Amphitheatre (you can roll into the arena), the Forum and basilica, the House of the Faun, the bakery of Modesto, the Lupanare (brothel), the Stabian Baths exterior, and several painted houses. The villas outside the walls (Villa of the Mysteries) and the upper-level houses are not on the route.

Practical conditions

Bring water and sun protection — there is almost no shade in summer. The hard-packed path can become dusty; a powered chair with off-road tyres or a companion to push is recommended. Accessible toilets are available at the entrance and near the Forum.

Combined with Vesuvius and Herculaneum

Herculaneum has partial accessibility (the upper terrace and some streets, with lifts). Vesuvius summit is not accessible — the crater rim path is gravel and steep.

Frequently asked questions

Is the route really 3 kilometres?

Yes, roughly. Plan 3 hours including stops. Skip optional spurs to shorten.

Can I rent a wheelchair on site?

A small number of wheelchairs are available for free loan at the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance, but they go quickly. Bring your own if you can.

Are guided accessible tours available?

Yes. Several Naples-based operators offer wheelchair-accessible Pompeii tours with trained guides — they know exactly which alleys to avoid.

How do I get to Pompeii from Naples or Sorrento accessibly?

The Circumvesuviana train is not fully accessible. Use a private WAV transfer (€100-150 from Naples) or the Campania Express train (some accessible carriages, advance booking required).
