Accessible Naples and Capri

In short

Naples is chaotic but its main sights — the Archaeological Museum, the Royal Palace, the Duomo and the seafront promenade — are wheelchair accessible. Capri is partly accessible via the funicular from Marina Grande to Capri Town; Anacapri requires the bus or taxi but is then flat. The Blue Grotto is not accessible.

Naples has a difficult accessibility reputation that's only partly earned — it's chaotic, yes, but the city's major monuments are well-equipped and the airport, port and central station all work. Capri is more constrained but possible.

Naples city accessibility

The seafront from Castel dell'Ovo to Mergellina is flat and accessible (3km promenade). The National Archaeological Museum has lift access and free entry for disabled visitors. The Royal Palace and Teatro San Carlo are step-free. The Spaccanapoli (historic main street) is partly cobbled but rollable.

Getting to Capri accessibly

Take the hydrofoil from Naples Molo Beverello to Capri's Marina Grande — most operators have wheelchair-accessible vessels with ramps. Confirm when booking. The crossing is 50 minutes.

Capri Town

From Marina Grande, take the funicular (fully accessible — lift access to both stations) up to Capri Town. The famous Piazzetta is flat. Via Camerelle (the shopping street) is flat. The Gardens of Augustus require a moderate walk on stone paths but are accessible.

Anacapri and Monte Solaro

Reach Anacapri by accessible taxi (the SITA bus has a wheelchair lift but reliability is variable). Anacapri's centre is flat. The Monte Solaro chairlift is NOT wheelchair accessible (single open chairs). Villa San Michele is partly accessible.

What's not accessible on Capri

Blue Grotto (requires transfer to a tiny rowing boat through a low arch — not realistic for wheelchair users). Faraglioni rocks boat tour (some operators have accessible boats, confirm). Most hiking paths.

Frequently asked questions

Is Naples airport accessible?

Yes — fully modern airport with Sala Amica assistance. Pre-book like Sala Blu.

Should I avoid the Naples historic centre?

No — it's atmospheric and largely doable, just plan rest stops. Avoid Saturday evening crowds.

Can I see the Blue Grotto somehow?

Only by accepting the transfer challenge or skipping. Many visitors enjoy the boat ride around the island instead.

Best base for Naples + Capri trip?

Naples seafront (Hotel Excelsior, Royal Continental) — short transfer to the port for the Capri day trip.
