Why 'accessible room' is not a specification
Italian hotels range from purpose-built city properties to converted palazzi and family-run lakeside villas. There is no single national standard applied uniformly in practice, and booking platforms collapse very different realities into one filter. Two properties can both tick 'accessible' while one has a roll-in shower with fold-down seat and the other has a bathtub with a grab rail.
The measurements we ask for on every verification
- Clear opening width of the entrance door and the bathroom door, in centimetres
- Shower entry: roll-in, low lip (give the height), or bathtub only
- Grab rails: present next to the toilet, inside the shower, and on which side
- Bed height from floor to top of mattress, and clear space on both sides
- Turning space in the bedroom and bathroom
- Lift car internal dimensions and door width — decisive for larger power chairs
- Step-free route from the street to reception, and from reception to the room
- Whether the accessible room can be blocked to your reservation, not just requested
The booking mistakes we see most often
Requesting instead of blocking
Many reservations carry an accessibility 'request' that is never guaranteed. Ask explicitly whether the specific adapted room is allocated to your booking and noted in the reservation record.
Trusting a photograph from the website
Marketing photography is often years old and shot in the best room of its category. A dated photograph taken this week, of the room type you are actually booking, is the standard we ask for.
Ignoring the route to the door
A step-free room behind a single 12 cm entrance step is not step-free. The route from the pavement matters as much as the room.
Regional differences worth knowing
- Milan and Porta Nuova-era buildings tend to have the most modern accessible bathrooms and the largest lifts
- Historic centres in Rome and Florence often have small retrofit lifts — always ask for internal car dimensions
- Lake Como and Amalfi properties are frequently built into slopes, so internal level changes are common even in new-build hotels
- Agriturismi and villas may have excellent ground-floor rooms but gravel approaches — ask about the surface, not just the steps
